OKLAHOMA CITY - A 16-year-old Altus girl, who once hid much of her face from view, is sporting a new look and a lot of smiles these days following 15 months and multiple surgeries by of a team of specialists at OU Medical Center.
Laura Bacon, her mother and the lead surgeon on the case met with the media today, March 24, to unveil Laura's new face and to share further details about the surgeries that reconstructed the right side of Laura's face. The teenager's face was left deformed following aggressive cancer treatments at age 4.
15-year-old Laura Bacon developed cancer of the right eye when she was 4. Surgery, followed by chemotherapy and proton therapy (a then novel treatment) destroyed the cancer, but also impacted the normal growth of the structures of her face. For years, Laura has tried to hide that side of her face from the world and dreamed of the day when she might be able to look "normal."
Now, thanks to the efforts of Dr. Ivan Wayne, Dr. Scott Sigler, Dr. Alan Miyake and the surgical team at the OU Medical Center, Laura has gotten that chance.
